'Sneaker heads' have A.Okay time at Lake View shop
BY MARY SUSAN LITTLEPAGE

Turtle on HBO's "Entourage" surely would have fun shopping at A.Okay Official.

The fly-looking, sneaker-obsessed character on the hit TV show would undoubtedly appreciate the many limited edition styles of sneakers at the new shop, at 3270 N. Clark St. in Lakeview.

The shop carries limited edition sneakers ranging from $60 to about $1,650 in a rainbow of colors and designs for men and women. Most sneakers are brought to the store by other sneaker collectors and are sold by consignment.

Besides sneakers, the shop is full of urban vinyl toys, bags and paintings on canvases. Whether it's one-of-a-kind sneakers, toys, dance music or art that you dig, a trip to the shop on Saturday, June 9, is in order: That's when DJ B.Vax will spin music and Joey Potts will paint live at 1 p.m. at the shop.

Born and raised in Chicago, Jason Uzarraga, 28, and Jessica Uzarraga, 26, are husband and wife co-owners of the shop. They also are husband and wife, and they recently celebrated their honeymoon. Talking about the combination of sneakers, vinyl toys and canvases, Jason says, "All of them are combined through art."

Caricatures of Biz Markie, Questlove, Nas and a female sailor featured in paintings by local artist Deal pump up the hip factor at the store. Biz Markie, wearing a cross necklace, looks pouty, and a female bustier-wearing sailor looks charmingly naughty sticking out her tongue.

Local artists whose work is featured at the shop include Deal, Ruin, Stizo, Joey D., Bonus, Joker, Peabe, Blutt and Johnny Tran, who have painted canvases and/or designs featured on shoes and skateboards at the shop.

Toys at the shop include do-it-yourself vinyl toys that you can paint, furry mustache toys by Chicago-based Shawnimals and a green plastic Kaching Brands Statue of Liberty who looks as if she is wearing green platform shoes and is ready for a night out on the town.

Sneaker customers at the shop tend to be between 18 and 35 years old, with most big collectors in their 20s, Jason says. Shoppers buying vinyl toys range from about 13 to 50, though; he says that the older customers who like the vinyl toys tend to have a great love for art in general.

Sneaker brands at the shop include Adidas, Alife, Golas, Lacoste, Nike, PF Flyers and others.

On a recent afternoon Harry Kagan, 17, of Lincoln Park, removed a pair of Vans to try on a pair of Alife sneakers. He said that he likes the colors—blue and yellow—of the Alife sneakers because they are the same colors of Ithaca College, where he plans to attend school in the fall. "They're all patent leather, which is interesting," he said. "They're a little outrageous, but sometimes that's necessary."

The shop is a great addition to the neighborhood, Kagan said. "Most of these [kinds of fun] places are in Wicker Park or Bucktown," he said. "I like the blend of street culture and art and clothing." Although he has a few vinyl toys, Kagan said the fashion-friendly sneakers interest him more. "I hope more places like this will open up," he said.

Although some sneaker collectors don't wear the sneakers that they buy, Jessica says that she and Jason actually wear all of their sneakers. "We've always liked sneakers," she said.

Talking about co-worker Brian Nevado, Jason says, "He's a big sneaker head. I'm a big sneaker lover, too, but I'm not as big as him." Jason estimates that Brian probably has about 50 pairs of sneakers. Jason has 15 or 20 pairs of sneakers, and Jessica has about 15 pairs.

Last fall Jason, Jessica and Brian spent about five or six months researching and planning to see how they could make their love for sneakers, toys and art mesh with targeting the hip, urban market. Then they made connections with vendors, and they bought many vinyl toys in San Francisco and New York.

A.Okay Official plans to host many weekend events in the summer to encourage other urban artists with their work.
