Dresses are flattering on a lot of bodies, and they're often forgiving where they need to be, but there aren't many places in the city where women can go for one-stop shopping for dresses, according to Wicker Park's newest entrepreneurs Eva and Robyn Anderson.
The sisters-in-law opened their new dress shop, Le Dress, at 1741 W. Division St. on Friday. Although some people don't consider Chicago a "fashion mecca," Robyn, 25, says she and Eva, 28, love the city and want to help to add to its fashion-savvy landscape.
Dressed in a black-and-white top and a yellow jacket that pops with color, she says of the local retail scene, "It's getting a lot better." Eva, wearing a green button-up top, says, "We wanted to go to a boutique that sold just dresses, and we wanted just one stop. That was really missing in Chicago." She says that she and Robyn decided to open a dresses-only boutique because they wanted to create a different shop. And besides, as Eva says, "Dresses are just so easy to wear."
Le Dress will carry brands such as Betsey Johnson, Trina Turk, ABS, Shoshanna, Julie Brown, Lia Kes, Wendy Katlen and Lauren Conrad. "Everyone knows 'The Hills,'" Robyn says of Conrad, the young designer and main character on MTV's hit pseudo-reality show. "We just really wanted to have a variety of dresses," says Eva, adding that dresses will cost $40-$500.
Styles will go from "really dressy" and fun to career dresses and "something for every occasion."
Le Dress customers are likely to be mostly from their early 20s to their late 30s or "anyone who's looking for a dress," Robyn says. She also says that she and Eva hope to launch their own brand of dresses and a bridesmaid line in a year or two.
As for popular trends, Robyn says that tribal, abstract floral prints and bright colors are big for spring and summer.
In addition to carrying dresses, Le Dress will have accessories, jackets, Spanx and double-sided tape. "We're there to help you remember everything to go with a dress," Eva says.
Robyn and Eva scoped out other locations around town before settling on Division Street.
"It's kind of an up-and-coming neighborhood," Robyn says, noting that it has a healthy mix of small, fun boutiques and is not overcrowded with national chains.
Eva is originally from Slovakia but moved to the Chicago area when she was 11 and grew up in Downers Grove. Robyn grew up in Clear Lake, Iowa, and both studied fashion design at Iowa State University. Eva also married Robyn's brother Mike.
The two also had exciting internships during college.
Eva interned with Alan Lalu, a French bridal designer, who would send her to experience different parts of Paris to be inspired. She would return to his studio to sketch dresses all day. "I loved working with him," she says, recalling that he had piles and piles of old French Vogue magazines in his studio. Eva says she especially liked getting one-on-one feedback from Lalu about why certain sketches of hers would and would not work.
Robyn interned at Marc Jacobs in New York, where she worked with a close-knit group of people on the brand's women's collection. There she helped with testing fabrics and did a variety of other tasks. She says she appreciated her time there because she liked seeing "the whole process" progress from sketches to models' wearing clothes on the runway.
Before helping to open Le Dress, Eva worked for the international fashion group Escada and also launched Sorority Baby, which she describes as "fun girlie wear" that caters to people in the college Greek system. In addition, she helped with merchandising for Ralph Lauren. Robyn helped with her family's business by doing marketing and project development.
Besides carrying a range of sizes at a variety of prices, Eva says she hopes that "no one's afraid to go to the shop." She adds, "We want you to be excited when you walk in."
"Dresses are flattering on a lot of bodies," Eva says.
"And they're forgiving where you need them to be," Robyn says.
