DJ Sassmouth to host Women’s Right to Choose benefit
BY MARY SUSAN LITTLEPAGE

When Samantha Kern, aka DJ Sassmouth, talks about how many clubbers in Cincinnati are insanely responsive and positive about her techno and electro DJ sets, she has a sound of slight amazement in her voice. She comes across as confident but doesn’t talk in an arrogant tone. Rather, she sounds touched that so many folks enjoy her DJ sets and sounds flattered that a female clubber in Cincinnati gave her a black shirt because it looked like something that Kern would wear.

Sassmouth, who hosts and plays at her Etikett techno, electro and minimal night on the first and third Wednesdays at Betty’s Blue Star Lounge, will play alongside DJ Shiva from Indianapolis and local techno darlings Kate Simko and Dirtybird on Nov. 15 for a Women’s Right to Choose benefit.

Kern decided to host the benefit partly because she is disgusted with right-wing conservatives trying to undo the work of Roe v. Wade. Also, Shiva has raised money through her Venus Envy techno night in Indianapolis for an after-school group that helps get young girls involved in mechanics, computer classes and other programs that traditionally cater more toward men. And Sassmouth says she and Shiva wanted to celebrate women’s right to choice—rather than all tits out—at Betty’s.

Besides being part of the NBFC (Naughty Bad Fun Collective) crew that rocks Betty’s regularly, Sassmouth, who favors “dark, big bass sounds,” is a resident DJ at Kate Simko’s Wake Up! nights at Sonotheque, and she has become frequent DJ partners in crime with the Punisher, the techno DJ/producer in Detroit.

“I always have respected her, and she totally bangs it,” Sassmouth says of the Punisher. So, when techno DJ friend Frankie Vega suggested that they tag-team, Sassmouth says, “I thought, ‘How am I going to DJ with her?’”

Fast-forward to almost a year after their first tag-team, and the two play together often, following a mini-tour in the summer. Sassmouth says, “It feels really comfortable now,” and they play all sorts of techno varieties, whether it’s dark and melodic or organic drum sounds, without explaining anything to each other.

Sassmouth, who sometimes rocks a black T-shirt that reads “FUCK TRANCE,” says she hopes to organize a European DJ tour. Ibiza?

“Hah!” she says with a throaty laugh. With some of her friends living in Berlin, though, she says, “Germany is a strong possibility.”

Etikett: A Woman’s Right to Choose Benefit with DJ Shiva, Kate Simko (live), Dirtybird and Sassmouth at 10 pm on Nov. 15 at Betty’s Blue Star Lounge, 1600 W. Grand, (312) 243-8778. No cover. Donations and 15 percent of bar proceeds will be donated to NARAL Pro Choice America.
